Sarasvati~~is the goddess of knowledge and the arts. she has the proud status of being the first goddess to be worshipped in Hinduism and is a shining example for her younger siblings, Lakshmi and Parvati. Goddess Sarasvati, being wise and creative, was thought to be the perfect match for Brahma, the lord of creation. But according to some legends, Sarasvati and Brahma had a disastrous marriage. Put off by Sarasvati's lack of affection due to her being both his daughter and wife, Brahma chose to disinherit her and kick her out of his house. So much for divorce court. But this great insult didn't go unpunished. Brahma was subsequently cursed to lose his devotees and their worship in the temples. Thankfully, Sarasvati bounced back with a fabulous set of pearl mala (rosaries) to channel her anger through meditation, and went on to establish a unique identity. She developed a creative community of her own and has come to symbolize the independent woman as a thinker and gifted creator, Though this goddess has no children, it is widely believed that musicians, artists, writers, and students are all part of her family and under her care. Free from a husband's nagging, Sarasvati enjoys playing her instrument, the veena, as loud as she wants and can sit glued to her favorite books, the Vedas, guilt-free for hours. She is a picture of grace and elegance, so it's little wonder that she chooses the beautiful white swan as her constant companion. Gods, eat your hearts out, because this goddess is not available or interested - that is, unless you have a library card or can play back up sitar. –The Little Book of Hindu Deities by Sanjay Patel, Plume 2006.
